Birmingham-Southern College (Alabama - US)

Birmingham–Southern College (BSC) is a private liberal arts college located three miles (5 km) northwest of downtown Birmingham. Founded in 1856, it is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Approximately 1400 students from 30 states and 23 countries attend the college.

The campus is situated on 192 wooded acres three miles west of downtown Birmingham.  The College has 45 academic, residential, administrative, and athletics buildings/facilities.  New facilities since 1998 include a 100,000 square-foot science center, a renovated humanities center, an admission welcome center, two residence halls featuring suite-style accommodations for 167 students, student center, fitness center, football complex, new Fraternity Row, and an urban environmental park/lake.

Birmingham-Southern’s new Explorations curriculum moves general education away from a more traditional, “check-box” approach—which emphasizes disciplinary requirements—to one that stresses the importance of what students learn to do.
This new pedagogy of doing is illustrated by requirements that guide students in learning how to communicate effectively, solve complex problems in creative ways, connect their coursework to the wider world, engage with their social and political world, and engage in self-directed teaching and learning.
These are precisely the skills and perspectives that professional schools, graduate schools, and employers are seeking in today’s increasingly complex and inter-connected world.

Auburn University (Alabama - US)

Auburn University was established in 1856 as the East Alabama Male College, 20 years after the city of Auburn's founding. In 1872, under the Morrill Act, the school became the first land-grant college in the South and was renamed the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama. In 1899 the name again was changed, to the Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Finally, in 1960 the name of the school was changed to Auburn University, a title more in keeping with its location, and expressing the varied academic programs and larger curriculum of a major university.

Today, Auburn is one of the few universities to carry the torch as a land, sea and space grant university. Our Fall 2010 semester enrollment was 25,078. Our students can choose from more than 140 degree options in 13 schools and colleges at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels.

Auburn University has developed into one of the largest universities in the South, remaining in the educational forefront with its traditional blend of arts and applied science, and changing with the needs of today while living with a respect for the traditions and spirit that are Auburn.
